Glossary

阴 / Yin
The broken line; coin values 6 and 8 are yin.
阳 / Yang
The unbroken line; coin values 7 and 9 are yang.
经卦 / Trigram
One of eight three-line patterns: Qian, Dui, Li, Zhen, Xun, Kan, Gen and Kun.
重卦 / Hexagram
Two trigrams form six lines, numbered from bottom to top.
卦辞 / Judgment
The core text statement for a whole hexagram; favorable and unfavorable terms have context.
爻辞 / Line statement
A core text statement for one position or stage within a pattern.
动爻 / Changing line
Coin values 6 and 9; Plum Blossom instead selects a line by division by six. These are separate rules.
本卦 / Primary pattern
The six-line pattern initially cast.
变卦 / Relating pattern
The pattern after changing lines reverse polarity.
互卦 / Nuclear pattern
Normally formed by lines 2–3–4 below and 3–4–5 above, with method-specific exceptions.
体用 / Body and use
In this Plum Blossom method, the stable trigram is body and the moving one use; other books use the terms differently.
世应 / Host and guest
Two positions in the Najia eight-palace arrangement, three lines apart.
十神 / Ten gods
Ten relation categories comparing an element and polarity to the four-pillar day stem.
节 / Jie
Twelve solar-term instants used for four-pillar month boundaries.
大阿尔卡那 / Major Arcana
The 22 trump cards in this deck; ordering and image tradition should be identified.
花色 / Suit
Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles, fourteen cards per suit.
宫廷牌 / Court cards
Page, Knight, Queen and King in each suit; these may explore roles or actions rather than identify a person.
逆位 / Reversal
A reversed orientation; Waite includes favorable and ambiguous records, rather than one uniform opposite meaning.
牌阵 / Spread
A defined set of positions and their scope; the site’s three-card spreads are contemporary arrangements.
