The core text and the Wings

Distinguish judgments, line statements, Tuan, Xiang and later annotations.

Judgments and line statements

The received core text contains judgments and statements for six positions in each of 64 patterns. Initial is bottom, upper is top; nine names yang and six yin. Qian’s Yong Jiu and Kun’s Yong Liu are additional special passages, not ordinary seventh lines.

What Tuan and Xiang do

Tuan discusses the whole pattern. The Great Image develops conduct from the trigram combination, while the Small Images discuss individual lines. The core text, commentary and this site’s explanation are separate layers.

Why translations differ

Ancient vocabulary, punctuation and commentarial readings can differ. Zhen may involve divinatory determination and, in commentary, sound constancy. The source catalogue identifies the electronic text and its limitations rather than claiming a facsimile collation.

Sources and further reading

Explanations are written by this site; original excerpts are labeled separately. See the source catalogue for editions and scope.
