Literary names: from quotation to a modern name

Context for Xiu Yuan, Jing Shu and Huai Jin.

Seeking in Xiu Yuan

Original excerpt

路漫漫其修遠兮,吾將上下而求索。

The line in Li Sao describes a long road and continuing search. Xiu Yuan can express aspiration in a modern name, without a promise that the name ensures an easy life.

Jing Shu is a combination

Original excerpt

靜女其姝。

Jing and Shu can form a name from the poem Jing Nü, but they are not adjacent in the source line. A candidate should retain the actual quotation and mark the combination. The poem’s gender does not dictate a modern bearer.

The jade metaphor in Huai Jin

Original excerpt

懷瑾握瑜兮。

Huai Sha uses jade as a metaphor for integrity. A name borrows that literary sense; it does not prove its bearer’s character. Modern pronunciation and the surname need separate attention.
