Meaning, sound and names without literary quotations

Separate ancient senses, modern meaning and everyday sound.

Shuowen and present-day senses

Original excerpt

瑞,以玉為信也。

Shuowen’s Rui entry concerns a jade token; the modern auspicious sense is a different layer. A modern interpretation should not be presented as the earliest lexical meaning, or derived solely from one graphic component.

Modern combinations can have clear meaning

A nonliterary name can combine everyday meanings, sound and intended tone. Mark it as a modern combination rather than inventing a quotation. Gender preferences filter style, not a name’s worth or universal reception.

Read the whole name

Check tones, repeated syllables, polyphonic characters and common sound associations with the surname. Modern Mandarin does not represent every dialect, and phonetics does not establish luck. Everyday readability and use also matter.
